Penile Doppler Ultrasound Test:

Vaginal Doppler Ultrasound is a test that predicts how your erectile dysfunction (ED) will respond to vasodilator drugs that improve blood flow to the penis. It also enables the urologist to identify and document whether you have inflow or outflow erectile dysfunction. A number of causes can lead to erectile dysfunction. Some people respond effectively to vasodilator medications at first or for the remainder of their lives. Some disorders, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, damage blood arteries throughout the body, including the penis.

 If your condition causes inflow erectile dysfunction, vasodilator medicines may not be able to widen the arteries feeding the erectile bodies over time or when you initially come to our clinic for an evaluation. If this study could forecast their failure ahead of time, it would be unnecessary and inconvenient for you to try all of these therapies.

If you have a severe case of outflow erectile dysfunction, any therapy that increases blood flow during erection may not be enough to keep erections strong and/or long enough for satisfying intercourse. Depending on the severity of the outflow problem, a medically implanted penile prosthesis may be the only solution.

Method:

The examination will take place while you are lying on your back on the examination table. A very little needle will be used to inject a vasodilator chemical called Trimix into the penile. This will aid in the relaxation of your penile muscles as well as the dilation of your penile arteries. This causes an increase in blood flow to your penis, resulting in an erection.  The injection causes most people to feel like they've been bitten by an insect.

We'll monitor blood flow in the penile artery on both sides of the penis with a small ultrasound probe put along the shaft of the penis.
